Best Smart Blinds for HDB Bay Windows

Bay windows are one of the most common — and most awkward — window shapes in Singapore HDB flats. The recessed, multi-panel frame doesn't take a standard curtain rail well, which is exactly where motorised blinds do their best work. Here's how to choose the right type and plan the layout.

Why Bay Windows Are Different

A typical HDB bay window is really two or three separate glass panels set at angles to each other, often with a built-in ledge or seat below. Curtain tracks struggle here because the rail would need to bend around each corner, and a single flat blind can't span the whole recess without gaps. The practical fix is to treat each panel as its own window and fit it with its own motorised blind — one headrail, one motor, one piece of fabric per panel.

This is also why bay windows are almost always measured and quoted per panel rather than as one continuous width. During the on-site survey, we measure each panel's exact drop and width so every blind sits flush against its own pane with no light gaps at the edges.

Which Blind Type Works Best

Roller blinds are the simplest and most budget-friendly option for a bay window — a single fabric roll per panel, motor hidden in the tube, clean lines that don't compete visually with the window itself. Good for study rooms, kitchens, or any bay window where you mainly want light and privacy control.

Combi/zebra blinds are the most popular choice for bay window seats, since these are often used for sitting, reading, or even sleeping close to the glass. The alternating sheer and opaque stripes let you soften daylight during the day and go fully opaque at night, all from the same blind.

Venetian blinds suit bay windows where you want fine-tuned light angle control rather than fully open or closed — useful for a bay that catches strong afternoon sun. Slats tilt to redirect light without blocking the view entirely.

Motorised curtain tracks are generally not recommended for bay windows unless the bay is very wide and shallow-angled — the corner joints in a curved or angled track add cost and are more prone to snagging than simply running separate blinds per panel.

Planning the Layout: One Scene, Multiple Motors

The most common concern with a multi-panel bay window is ending up with three separate remotes or three separate app entries to manage every day. In practice, each panel's motor is added to the same Tuya/Smart Life or Aqara Home app and grouped together, so a single tap, schedule, or voice command ("Alexa, open the bay window") triggers every panel at once. You can still open individual panels separately when you want — for example, closing just the side panel that catches the afternoon sun while leaving the centre panel open.

If you're also motorising other rooms, the bay window group can be folded into a wider "Good Morning" or "Movie Night" scene alongside your living room track or bedroom blinds, all from the same app.

What to Check Before Ordering

Measure — or better, let us measure — each panel individually rather than assuming they're identical widths; many HDB bay windows have a wider centre panel flanked by two narrower angled ones. Confirm there's a power point or accessible wiring route near the bay for the motor, since most of our installs use hardwired or rechargeable battery motors depending on panel size. And decide upfront whether the bay window seat needs blackout at night (favouring combi or venetian) or just daytime privacy (roller may be enough) — it changes which fabric tier we'd recommend.
