Corner Units With East and West Windows: One Blind Plan for Two Suns in a Singapore Home
Corner units and dual-aspect layouts are popular for their cross-ventilation and views, but they come with a quiet planning problem: the sun hits one side at breakfast and the opposite side at tea time. One blind plan for all windows rarely works. This guide shows how to treat each side on its own terms while keeping the home looking and behaving as one.
Why Dual-Aspect Units Are Different
In a single-aspect flat, you can usually pick one answer to the sun and apply it everywhere. In a corner or dual-aspect unit, the east side wants one thing in the morning and the west side wants another in the afternoon. A fabric that is perfect for gentle morning light may be nowhere near enough for the strong, low, hot afternoon sun on the opposite wall.
Before choosing anything, confirm which way each window faces. A compass app helps, but building plans and the free on-site survey are more reliable. We cover each side in depth in our guides to east-facing windows and west-facing windows; this guide is about putting them together.
Plan Each Elevation Separately, Then Unify
A good method is to list every window and give it three notes: direction, room, and what the person in that room is doing when the sun arrives. A bedroom with east light needs a dawn answer. A living room with west light needs a heat and glare answer. A kitchen window on the same side may need a humidity-friendly material first and a sun answer second.
| Side | Typical problem | Fabric or product direction | Starting price (GST-inclusive) |
|---|---|---|---|
| East windows (morning sun) | Early wake-ups, glare on bed and breakfast table | Blackout roller or Combi Blackout in bedrooms; sunscreen roller in living areas | Blackout roller from $60/sqm; combi Blackout $99/sqm; sunscreen roller from $55/sqm |
| West windows (afternoon sun) | Heat build-up, glare on TV and desks | Sunscreen or blackout roller, double curtain track, or outdoor zip blinds on a balcony | Roller from $55/sqm; track from $150; zip from $170/sqm |
| Sheltered or bathroom windows | Humidity more than sun | Aluminium or PVC venetian | Venetian from $80/sqm |
Notice that the answer is not simply "darker on the west". A sunscreen roller on the west living room keeps the view and cuts glare, while a blackout roller on the east bedroom serves sleep. The goal is to match the job to the window.
Keep the Look Consistent
Two different products on two sides can look disjointed if you do not unify them. Stick to one colour family, match headrail or pelmet lines where possible, and keep fabric tones close even if the openness or opacity differs. Our guide to mixing curtains and blinds gives practical rules, and the blackout vs sheer layering guide explains how a sheer layer can tie two sides together.
Schedules: Two Suns, Two Timetables
This is where smart control earns its place. A dual-aspect unit practically asks for automation, because you would otherwise be adjusting blinds twice a day on opposite sides of the house. One workable pattern: east blinds open gradually in the morning, then lower once the sun is high; west blinds stay open during the cooler morning, then lower before the afternoon heat; both open partly in the evening and close fully after dark for privacy.
You can build this using the routines in our scenes guide. Since sunrise and sunset times and monsoon cloud change through the year, plan to nudge the times a few times a year using our seasonal schedules guide. Pairing the west-side "cool-down" with your air-conditioner timing is covered in smart blinds and air-con scheduling. We do not quote a specific energy saving, but cutting direct sun on the glass makes a room easier to cool.
Corner Windows and Bay Angles
Corner units sometimes include corner glass or bay-style windows. For a true right-angle corner, our L-shape (+$60) and U-shape (+$120) track bends, available only on the Customised Track and fixed at 90 degrees, can follow the corner with one continuous curtain run. For shallower, multi-panel bay windows, blinds fit better; see smart blinds for HDB bay windows and curtain track types for the difference. Wide glass is also covered in the living room track length guide.
One Ecosystem, Many Windows
With many windows on two sides, it is easiest to keep every motor on the same ecosystem, either Tuya/Smart Life or Aqara, so scenes can include everything. Our Tuya vs Aqara comparison explains the trade-offs. If your unit is large or has thick walls, check signal strength first; the hub placement guide has practical tips.
Power matters too. Windows far from sockets are good candidates for battery motors (a $20-$40 premium on roller, combi and venetian blinds, typically charged every 3-6 months), while windows near sockets can run wired. The battery vs hardwired guide helps you split the two sensibly.
A Simple Process to Follow
Start with a floor plan and mark each window's direction. Note the room and the time of day it gets bothersome. Decide product and fabric per window, then check widths: roller and zip panels reach 3.0m wide, combi and venetian 2.4m, with a 1.5 sqm minimum billing area. Order with enough lead time, as fabrication and shipping take 5-6 weeks. Start from our 2026 price guide for a rough budget, then book the free on-site survey so the plan is checked against your real windows.
