Can Motorised Blinds Work With Google Home and Alexa? A Setup Guide

Short answer: yes. Every Tuya-based motor we install — curtain tracks, roller, combi, venetian, and outdoor zip blinds — links to both Google Home and Amazon Alexa through the free Smart Life app. Here's the full setup, start to finish.

Step 1: Set Up the Smart Life App

Download "Smart Life" from the App Store or Google Play and create an account. During installation, our technician will already pair your new motor to the app and add it under a labelled room (e.g. "Living Room Curtain"), so this step is usually done before we leave. If you're adding a new motor yourself later, put the motor into pairing mode (usually a long-press on the remote or a wall switch), tap "+ Add Device" in the app, and follow the on-screen steps.

Step 2: Confirm It's on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Like almost all Wi-Fi smart home motors, ours only connect to the 2.4GHz band, not 5GHz. If your home router broadcasts one combined network name for both bands, the app will usually detect and use the right one automatically — but if pairing fails, check your router settings for a separate 2.4GHz network name to select during setup.

Step 3: Link Smart Life to Google Home

Open the Google Home app, tap "+ Add", then "Works with Google", and search for "Smart Life". Log in with the same Smart Life account, and your blinds and curtains will appear automatically as controllable devices in Google Home, ready for voice commands and Routines.

Step 4: Link Smart Life to Amazon Alexa

In the Alexa app, go to "More" → "Skills & Games", search for "Smart Life", and enable the skill. Log in with your Smart Life account and tap "Discover Devices" — your blinds will show up under Alexa's device list within a minute or two. You can link both Google Home and Alexa to the same Smart Life account at once; they don't conflict.

What You Can Say Once It's Set Up

Voice Command What It Does
"Hey Google, open the living room curtain"Opens that specific motor fully
"Alexa, close the bedroom blinds"Closes that specific motor fully
"Hey Google, set bedroom blinds to 50%"Partial open/close, where supported
"Alexa, good morning" (Routine)Triggers a group of blinds/curtains at once

Step 5: Build a Schedule or Scene

Beyond one-off voice commands, both Google Home Routines and Alexa Routines let you trigger multiple blinds on a schedule or a spoken phrase — for example, all bedroom blinds opening at 7am, or a "movie night" phrase that closes the living room curtain and dims connected lights together. The Smart Life app itself also supports sunrise/sunset-based automation directly, without needing Google or Alexa at all.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If a blind stops responding to voice commands, check the Smart Life app first — if it shows offline there, it's a Wi-Fi issue, not a Google/Alexa issue, and usually resolves with a router restart. If it's online in Smart Life but missing from Google Home or Alexa, unlink and relink the Smart Life account under that assistant's connected services settings to refresh the device list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a smart home hub to connect blinds to Google Home or Alexa?
No — most of our motors connect directly over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi through the Smart Life app, and linking that app to Google Home or Alexa doesn't require any extra hub hardware.
Why does my motor only find 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and not 5GHz?
This is normal — nearly all Wi-Fi smart home motors, including ours, only support the 2.4GHz band. If your router broadcasts a single combined network name, you may need to temporarily split or prioritise the 2.4GHz band during setup.
Can I control blinds with Alexa and Google Home at the same time?
Yes. You can link the same Smart Life account to both Google Home and Amazon Alexa simultaneously, so either voice assistant — or both, if your household uses different speakers in different rooms — can control the same blinds.
What if my blind doesn't respond to a voice command?
Check the Smart Life app first to confirm the blind still shows as online — a Wi-Fi drop or router restart is the most common cause. If it's online there but not in Google Home or Alexa, try unlinking and relinking the Smart Life account in that assistant's app.
Does this work with Apple HomeKit and Siri too?
Tuya/Smart Life devices need a third-party bridge for native HomeKit support. If Apple HomeKit is your priority, our Aqara-compatible motors connect to Siri and the Home app directly — see our Tuya vs Aqara comparison for details.

Prefer Apple HomeKit and Siri instead? See our Tuya vs Aqara comparison to find out which ecosystem fits your home.
