Manual vs Motorised Blinds: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

On most of our blinds, the manual option is genuinely free — you're not being charged extra to skip the motor. So the real question isn't "how much cheaper is manual", it's "what am I actually paying for when I add a motor, and is that worth it for this specific window". Here's the honest, product-by-product breakdown.

What "Manual" Actually Means, Product by Product

"Manual" isn't one single thing across our range — each product has its own mechanism, and it isn't always free:

Roller blinds and combi/zebra blinds: a Manual Beaded Pulling Chain, included at no extra cost. You pull the chain to raise, lower, or (on combi blinds) shift the alternating sheer/opaque stripes.

Venetian blinds: a Premium Manual One-Loop/Mono mechanism, also free, available across all four slat materials — timber, polystyrene, PVC, and aluminium.

Outdoor zip blinds: a Manual Pulling Chain, but this one costs $180, and it's only offered for windows narrower than 1m. Above that width, a motor is required — a manual chain at a wide balcony opening simply isn't practical or safe to operate at height.

Curtain track: there's no manual, non-motorised version in our lineup. The base price already includes the SHL Tuya Smart Wi-Fi motor. Our "DIY Set" refers to installing the motorised track yourself with the included assembly instructions — it's a self-install option, not a non-motorised one. If you want a traditional pull-cord curtain rail, that sits outside what we sell.

What You're Actually Buying With a Motor

The chain or crank itself works fine — it's not a downgrade in reliability. What a motor adds is control you don't have to be standing in the room for: opening from the Smart Life or Aqara Home app when you're still on the MRT home, a voice command through Google Home, Alexa, or Siri (via Aqara's HomeKit support), and scheduled or scene-based automation — a "Good Morning" scene that opens every motorised blind at 7am, or a "Movie Night" scene that closes them with one phrase. None of that is possible on a manual chain, no matter how well it's installed.

There's also a practical angle that has nothing to do with smart home features: reach. A manual chain assumes you can stand close enough to pull it — for tall windows, deep bay window recesses, or a void-deck-facing living room where you'd rather not walk right up to the glass each time, a motor removes that constraint entirely. This is often the deciding factor for households that were on the fence about "needing" smart features at all.

What You Trade Off

Cost is the obvious one — anywhere from +$280 to +$850 per blind depending on product and motor tier, which adds up quickly across a multi-window home. Beyond price, a wired motor (A-OK Tuya Smart, SHL Tuya on curtain track) needs a nearby UK power point, so it's worth planning that into your renovation electrical stage rather than discovering it's missing on install day. A battery motor (A-OK Tuya Cordless) avoids the wiring but needs recharging roughly every 3–6 months. Zigbee motors (Aqara) need an Aqara hub if you don't already have one for HomeKit. A manual chain has none of these dependencies — no Wi-Fi, no charging, no hub, no power point.

So, Manual or Motorised? A Practical Way to Decide

Stay manual for: store rooms, spare rooms, bathrooms, and any window you rarely adjust — the upgrade cost buys you very little if the blind sits in the same position most of the time anyway. It's also the sensible default if you're fitting out an entire flat on a tight budget and want to motorise selectively later.

Motorise: the living room and main bedroom first — these are the rooms where a "Good Morning" or "Movie Night" scene actually gets used daily, and where reach is often a real problem (wide living room glass, a bay window with multiple panels). For outdoor zip blinds specifically, the manual chain is really only sensible on a narrow window under 1m — anything wider means a motor isn't optional in our lineup, and honestly, cranking a wide outdoor blind by hand at height isn't something most customers want to do daily regardless of price.
