Manual vs Motorised Blinds: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

On most of our blinds, the manual option is genuinely free — you're not being charged extra to skip the motor. So the real question isn't "how much cheaper is manual", it's "what am I actually paying for when I add a motor, and is that worth it for this specific window". Here's the honest, product-by-product breakdown.

What "Manual" Actually Means, Product by Product

"Manual" isn't one single thing across our range — each product has its own mechanism, and it isn't always free:

Roller blinds and combi/zebra blinds: a Manual Beaded Pulling Chain, included at no extra cost. You pull the chain to raise, lower, or (on combi blinds) shift the alternating sheer/opaque stripes.

Venetian blinds: a Premium Manual One-Loop/Mono mechanism, also free, available across all four slat materials — timber, polystyrene, PVC, and aluminium.

Outdoor zip blinds: a Manual Pulling Chain, but this one costs $180, and it's only offered for windows narrower than 1m. Above that width, a motor is required — a manual chain at a wide balcony opening simply isn't practical or safe to operate at height.

Curtain track: there's no manual, non-motorised version in our lineup. The base price already includes the SHL Tuya Smart Wi-Fi motor. Our "DIY Set" refers to installing the motorised track yourself with the included assembly instructions — it's a self-install option, not a non-motorised one. If you want a traditional pull-cord curtain rail, that sits outside what we sell.

What You Actually Pay to Motorise

Here's the real price gap between staying manual and adding each motor tier, pulled directly from our live product calculators:

Product Manual Option Cheapest Motor Most Premium Motor
Roller / Combi blindsFREE (beaded chain)+$290 (S) Tuya Smart Wi-Fi+$385 (M) Aqara HomeKit
Venetian (aluminium)FREE (One-Loop/Mono)+$280 AOK RF Motor+$280 (only RF motor offered for this slat class)
Venetian (timber/PS/PVC)FREE (One-Loop/Mono)+$360 (M) Tuya Smart+$385 (M) Aqara TA HomeKit
Outdoor zip blinds$180 (chain, W < 1m only)+$460 A-OK Tuya Wi-Fi+$850 SOMFY Silent

All prices are GST-inclusive. Roller, combi, and venetian motor prices vary by tube size (S/M) — see each product's live calculator for your exact window.

What You're Actually Buying With a Motor

The chain or crank itself works fine — it's not a downgrade in reliability. What a motor adds is control you don't have to be standing in the room for: opening from the Smart Life or Aqara Home app when you're still on the MRT home, a voice command through Google Home, Alexa, or Siri (via Aqara's HomeKit support), and scheduled or scene-based automation — a "Good Morning" scene that opens every motorised blind at 7am, or a "Movie Night" scene that closes them with one phrase. None of that is possible on a manual chain, no matter how well it's installed.

There's also a practical angle that has nothing to do with smart home features: reach. A manual chain assumes you can stand close enough to pull it — for tall windows, deep bay window recesses, or a void-deck-facing living room where you'd rather not walk right up to the glass each time, a motor removes that constraint entirely. This is often the deciding factor for households that were on the fence about "needing" smart features at all.

What You Trade Off

Cost is the obvious one — anywhere from +$280 to +$850 per blind depending on product and motor tier, which adds up quickly across a multi-window home. Beyond price, a wired motor (A-OK Tuya Smart, SHL Tuya on curtain track) needs a nearby UK power point, so it's worth planning that into your renovation electrical stage rather than discovering it's missing on install day. A battery motor (A-OK Tuya Cordless) avoids the wiring but needs recharging roughly every 3–6 months. Zigbee motors (Aqara) need an Aqara hub if you don't already have one for HomeKit. A manual chain has none of these dependencies — no Wi-Fi, no charging, no hub, no power point.

So, Manual or Motorised? A Practical Way to Decide

Stay manual for: store rooms, spare rooms, bathrooms, and any window you rarely adjust — the upgrade cost buys you very little if the blind sits in the same position most of the time anyway. It's also the sensible default if you're fitting out an entire flat on a tight budget and want to motorise selectively later.

Motorise: the living room and main bedroom first — these are the rooms where a "Good Morning" or "Movie Night" scene actually gets used daily, and where reach is often a real problem (wide living room glass, a bay window with multiple panels). If you're renting, our renters guide covers how the motor and drilling requirements differ from a manual install, which matters more when you don't own the unit.

For outdoor zip blinds specifically, the manual chain is really only sensible on a narrow window under 1m — anything wider means a motor isn't optional in our lineup, and honestly, cranking a wide outdoor blind by hand at height isn't something most customers want to do daily regardless of price.

Choosing Between Motor Types

Once you've decided to motorise, the next decision is which ecosystem — Tuya/Smart Life or Aqara/HomeKit — and whether wired or battery power suits the window. We've broken both of those down separately: see our Tuya vs Aqara comparison and our battery vs hardwired motors guide for the full pricing and feature breakdown once you're past the "should I motorise at all" question this guide answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the manual chain really free, or is there a catch?
On roller blinds, combi/zebra blinds, and most venetian blind materials, the manual option (a beaded pulling chain, or a Premium Manual One-Loop/Mono for venetian) is genuinely included at no extra cost — you only pay for the fabric or slats and the frame. Outdoor zip blinds are the one exception: the Manual Pulling Chain is $180, and it's only available for windows narrower than 1m, since pulling a chain isn't practical at balcony height on a wider span. Curtain track doesn't offer a non-motorised version at all — the base track price already includes the SHL Tuya Smart Wi-Fi motor.
Which product has the cheapest motor upgrade from manual?
Roller and combi/zebra blinds have the lowest entry point: the A-OK Tuya Smart Wi-Fi motor is +$290 for the S-size tube (windows up to a moderate width) or +$360 for the M-size tube on larger blinds. Venetian blinds with aluminium slats are similar at +$280 for the AOK RF motor. Outdoor zip blinds and curtain track sit higher, at +$460 and up.
Can I mix manual and motorised blinds in the same home?
Yes, and it's a common way our customers control their budget. A typical setup motorises the living room and main bedroom — the rooms used daily and worth automating — while leaving a store room, spare room, or bathroom on a manual chain, since there's little benefit to voice control in a space you rarely open on schedule.
Can I upgrade a manual blind to a motor later?
It depends on the product and the headrail already installed, so it's not something we can promise generically online. If you're starting manual now but think you'll want to motorise a room later, mention that when you book your free on-site survey — our team can tell you on the spot whether your exact configuration supports a later swap, or whether it's simpler to order that blind motorised from the start.
Does going manual mean I lose all smart home features for that window?
For that specific blind, yes — a manual chain or crank has no app, voice, or schedule control, since there's no motor to connect to Wi-Fi or Zigbee. It can still sit in the same room as motorised blinds without any conflict; it simply won't appear as a device in Smart Life, Aqara Home, Google Home, or Alexa.
