Going on Holiday? Using Smart Blinds for Away Mode and a Lived-In Look in Singapore
Year-end school holidays, Chinese New Year, a week in Japan: Singaporeans travel often, and a home with every blind in the same position for ten days says "nobody's in". Scheduled motorised blinds and curtains can fix that, and also protect your sofa from the sun while you are gone. Here is how to set up an away mode properly, and where its limits are.
What Away Mode Can (and Can't) Do
Be clear about the goal first. Smart blinds are not a security system. What they can do is make the outside of your home look normal: windows that open in the morning and close in the evening, instead of a flat, unchanged view for the entire trip. They also keep valuables, electronics and your living room layout out of sight from corridors and neighbouring blocks when you choose to close up.
The second benefit is less obvious but very practical in Singapore. Direct sun through glass fades fabric, warps timber furniture and bakes the room. A home that is closed up with the blinds up for two weeks takes that heat and UV every afternoon. A schedule that lowers the right blinds at the right time is cheap insurance for your furniture and flooring.
Three Away-Mode Styles
Fully closed: every blind or curtain stays shut. This protects furniture best and hides the interior, but the unchanging pattern is the least natural. It suits short trips or very sunny west-facing rooms.
Daily rhythm: windows open in the morning and close in the evening, roughly matching when you would normally do it. This looks the most lived-in and is the one most people use for a week or longer.
Mixed by room: bedrooms stay closed for privacy, while the living room and kitchen follow the daily rhythm and sun-facing rooms lower partway at midday. This takes a few minutes more to set up and gives the best balance.
Which Products Suit an Away Schedule?
| Product | Away-mode fit | Things to check before you fly |
|---|---|---|
| Smart curtain track (from $150) | Good for large living room glass. Curtains opening and closing is a very visible, natural movement. | Wired Tuya motor, so power cuts matter more than battery. Confirm the schedule runs from the app or hub. |
| Roller blinds (from $55/sqm) | Simple and reliable for daily open and close. Blackout fabric (from $60/sqm) suits bedrooms you want sealed. | Choose wired or battery; battery adds $20-$40 and needs a top-up before a long trip. |
| Combi / zebra blinds (from $88/sqm) | Lets you leave stripes in a daylight position while the room stays visually private. | Same battery and schedule checks as roller blinds. |
| Venetian blinds (from $80/sqm) | Slat tilt gives a natural-looking change through the day without fully closing. | Tilt schedules need the motor to be reachable by your hub or app. |
| Outdoor zip blinds (from $170/sqm) | Useful for balconies, where weather and sun exposure continue while you are away. | Wired motor; check the schedule during an afternoon rain or wind period before relying on it. |
Setting Up a Simple Away Routine
In Smart Life (Tuya) or Aqara Home, create an automation that triggers on a time or on sunrise and sunset. A typical away setup is three steps: open the living room and kitchen blinds around 8am, lower the west-facing blinds partway at about 1pm, and close everything at around 7pm. Our guide to smart home scenes walks through building the routines step by step.
Add a little variety if the app allows it. Setting weekday and weekend times slightly apart, or choosing different times in different rooms, looks more natural than every blind moving at once. If you have both Tuya and Aqara devices, keep each ecosystem's schedule inside its own app. Our Tuya vs Aqara comparison explains how they differ.
Avoid relying on voice commands for this, since a schedule is what runs when no one is home. If you do use Google Home, Alexa or Siri for the schedule, test them as described in our voice command cheat sheet.
Test Before You Travel
Run your away routine for two or three days while you are still at home. Watch whether every blind reaches the right position, whether any motor lags behind the others, and whether the timing feels natural from outside. Fix problems now rather than from an airport lounge.
Check the basics too. Battery motors should be topped up, because a Li-ion motor that lasts 3-6 months on a normal charge can still run flat during a long trip if it was already low. Read our battery vs hardwired comparison if you are unsure which motors you have. Leave your router and any Aqara hub plugged in and powered, and see our power cut and Wi-Fi outage guide for what happens if either goes down. Our hub placement guide helps if a far room tends to miss commands.
Room-by-Room Tips for Singapore Homes
West-facing living room: lower the blinds or close sheer curtains by early afternoon. This is where fading and heat build-up are worst. See our west-facing windows guide.
Bedrooms: keep them closed or follow a very light schedule. Nobody sees in, and you avoid unnecessary motor use.
Balcony and outdoor zip blinds: keep them lowered in heavy weather and check them as you pass through monsoon or haze periods, as described in our rough weather guide.
HDB corridor-facing windows: keep these closed more of the time while you are away, as outlined in our corridor privacy guide.
What Not to Rely On
Do not treat blinds as a deterrent on their own. Keep your doors and windows locked, let a trusted neighbour or family member know you are away, and follow any security guidance from your management office or town council. If a schedule fails, the worst outcome should be blinds in the wrong position, not an unprotected home, so never depend on a schedule alone for anything important.
It is also sensible to limit who has app access. If a relative will check on the flat, invite them to the home in Smart Life or Aqara Home with only the access they need, and remove them when you return.
