Smart Curtains for Living Rooms: Track Length and Sliding Door Considerations

The living room is where a motorised curtain track earns its keep — it's usually the widest run of glass in the home, and the one window covering everyone actually notices working. But "wide" raises real questions: how long can one track go, does a sliding door need one motor or two, and does a longer track need a stronger motor? Here's how the numbers actually work.

Why the Living Room Is a Curtain Track's Best Fit

Living rooms in Singapore HDB flats and condos usually have the largest single opening in the home — a sliding door out to a balcony, a full-height glass wall, or a wide window seat. Fabric handles this kind of width more gracefully than a rigid blind panel: a curtain track can span a full sliding door run in one motorised motion, while a single blind panel much wider than about 2.4–3m starts to look and feel unwieldy (and our blind calculators auto-split panels beyond that width for exactly this reason). How Long Can One Track Actually Go?

Every SHL track is modular and cut to your exact window width, up to a stated maximum — you're not limited to fixed pre-set sizes. A DIY Set (self-assembled from pre-cut pieces) tops out at 5.2m; a Customised Track, measured on a free on-site survey and fabricated at our factory (~1.5 weeks), goes up to 6.2m. Beyond 6.2m — a full-height glass wall or a very long open-plan living/dining run — message us on WhatsApp and we'll quote a custom build.

Measuring Your Sliding Door Correctly

The number that matters is the clear width the track needs to cover — measure the full opening the sliding panels travel across, not just one panel's width, and measure at ceiling height where the track actually mounts, since that can differ slightly from the floor-level door frame width. For a typical HDB living room sliding door with 3-4 glass panels, that usually lands in the 2.4m-3.6m range, which fits the under-4.2m tier comfortably; a full glass balcony wall in a condo often runs 4.5m-6m and needs the 5.2m or 6.2m tier. Single Track vs Double Track for a Living Room

A single track gives you one curtain layer — most living rooms choose a light-filtering or dimout fabric here since full blackout isn't usually the priority in a common area. A double track (day + night) mounts two independently-motorised layers on a shared ceiling bracket — a sheer for daytime privacy and glare control, and a heavier blackout or block-out layer you close for movie nights or when the afternoon sun gets harsh on a west-facing glass wall. Double track uses two motors per window (so motor and track costs both double), saves $20 versus running two separate single-track jobs, and needs at least 18cm of pelmet clearance — versus 10cm for a single track — so check your ceiling recess depth before committing to two layers.

Track Shape: When L- and U-Bends Make Sense

Living rooms with a corner glass wall or a box bay sometimes want the track to bend around the corner rather than stopping at it. Our L-Shape (1 bend, +$60) and U-Shape (2 bends, +$120) options do exactly this — but only on Customised Track, and only at a fixed 90°. That's an important distinction for HDB living rooms specifically: as we cover in our curtain track types guide, a true right-angle corner (a box bay or corner glass wall) suits an L/U-bend track well, but the shallower, obtuse-angle multi-panel bay windows typical in HDB flats don't — for those, motorised blinds fitted panel-by-panel usually give a cleaner, better-fitting result than trying to force a track around the angle.

Does a Longer Track Need a Stronger Motor?

Our default SHL Tuya Smart Wi-Fi motor delivers 1.2 N·m of torque, which comfortably handles most living room tracks up to around 6m with standard-weight curtain fabric. For anything longer, a heavier blackout or lined fabric, or a double-track setup carrying two full curtain layers, we also offer a 2 N·m variant of the same Tuya motor — and the Aqara C3 motor (2 N·m, Zigbee + Matter, Apple HomeKit native) is built for exactly this large-window, heavier-load use case. Mention your track length and fabric weight when you message us on WhatsApp so we recommend the right torque before your on-site survey rather than after.

Pleat Style for a Living Room Look
