Battery vs Hardwired Motors for Smart Blinds: Pros and Cons

Before you pick a smart home ecosystem or a fabric, there's a more basic decision that shapes your whole install: does the motor plug into the wall, or run on a rechargeable battery? Both keep your blinds automated — but they solve different problems, and not every product line offers both. Here's how to choose.

How a Hardwired (Plug-In) Motor Works

Our default motors — the A-OK Tuya Smart Motor and the Aqara Smart Motor — run off a standard UK plug wired to a nearby power point, hidden inside the headrail or track housing. Power is continuous, so there's no charging cycle to manage and no risk of the blind losing motor power mid-schedule. This is also the only motor type we offer for curtain tracks (Tuya Wi-Fi included as standard, Aqara Zigbee +$155/motor, Aqara C3 +$185/motor) and for outdoor zip blinds (A-OK +$460, SOMFY Silent +$850), since both pull more fabric or run heavier-duty outdoor cycles than an indoor roller blind.

The trade-off is that a hardwired motor needs a power point within reach of the pelmet or headrail. For most living rooms and bedrooms with an existing socket nearby, this is a non-issue during professional installation. For a window on a wall with no nearby point — common in some older HDB layouts — it can mean adding one before install, or choosing a battery motor instead where available.

How a Battery (Cordless) Motor Works

Our A-OK Tuya Cordless Motor uses a rechargeable Li-ion battery instead of a plug, giving roughly 3–6 months of runtime per charge depending on how often the blind cycles. It's available for roller blinds (+$330 S / +$380 M), combi/zebra blinds (+$330 S / +$380 M), and venetian blinds (+$380, M size), and comes with an RF remote included — a nice extra, since our wired Aqara motors don't ship with one. It still connects to the Tuya / Smart Life app over Wi-Fi, so Google Home, Alexa, and scheduling all work exactly the same as a wired motor.

The obvious win is installation freedom: no power point needed near the window, no wiring assessment, and a genuinely simpler professional or DIY install. It suits rental flats where you'd rather not modify wiring, older units where the nearest socket is metres away, and any window where running a cable would mean unsightly trunking.

Which Should You Choose?

Go hardwired if: you already have a power point within reach of the window, you'd rather never think about charging, or you're motorising a curtain track or outdoor zip blind — where a battery option isn't offered because of the higher power draw.

Go battery/cordless if: there's no power point near the window and you don't want one added, you're in a rental and want to avoid any wiring work, or you just want the simplest possible install for a roller, combi, or venetian blind. It's also a popular pick for HDB bay windows, where multiple blind panels across one bay can make running cable to each one impractical.

Charging & Maintenance Reality Check

A Tuya Cordless motor's Li-ion battery lasts about 3–6 months between charges under typical use — less if you run frequent scheduled scenes (like a daily sunrise open and sunset close), more if you mostly control it manually a couple of times a day. The Tuya / Smart Life app sends a low-battery notification well before it runs out, and the included RF remote still works for manual control even if Wi-Fi is briefly down. Recharging is a simple plug-in top-up, the same routine as charging any other rechargeable home device.

One thing that doesn't change either way: an Aqara motor — wired or not — always needs a separate Aqara hub for Apple HomeKit control, while Tuya motors (wired or cordless) connect natively to Wi-Fi with no hub required.
