Blinds for Kitchens, Bathrooms and Service Yards: Humidity-Smart Choices for Singapore
Living rooms and bedrooms get most of the attention, but the windows that suffer most are the small ones: the kitchen window above the sink, the bathroom ventilation window and the service yard next to the washing machine. Steam, oil vapour, splashes and year-round humidity are hard on any window covering. Here's how to choose blinds that last in those rooms.
Why These Rooms Are Different
A Singapore home sits at roughly 80 to 90 percent relative humidity much of the year, and wet-area windows add more on top of that. A bathroom window sees steam every morning. A kitchen window collects fine oil vapour from wok cooking that settles on whatever hangs nearby. A service yard window, common in HDB flats and condos, often sits beside the washing machine and a drying area, so it deals with damp air, lint and the occasional splash.
These windows are usually small, which makes them tempting to skip or fill with the cheapest option. But a poorly chosen covering will stain, smell or warp within a year or two. The good news is that the right material choice and sensible placement solve most of the problem.
Material Matters More Than Motor
For wet-area windows, the slat or fabric material decides how well a blind survives. Aluminium and PVC venetian slats do not absorb moisture or oil, so a quick wipe resets them. They are also forgiving of humidity, which is why they are a common pick for bathrooms. Timber venetian looks beautiful but is better kept to dry rooms. If you want the details on each slat material, our venetian blinds material guide walks through the trade-offs.
Roller blinds are a good second choice, particularly in a smooth, solid or sunscreen fabric that wipes down easily. Place them where they will not sit directly above a hob. Heavy textured fabrics and curtains hold on to steam and cooking smells, so we generally steer customers away from curtain tracks in kitchens and bathrooms.
Quick Comparison for Wet and Humid Rooms
| Option | Best for | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium venetian | Kitchens, bathrooms, service yards | Wipe-clean, does not warp with moisture, from $80/sqm | Slats can feel utilitarian; wipe regularly |
| PVC venetian | Bathrooms, kitchens | Moisture-tolerant, easy to wipe, light | Plastic look; avoid heat directly above a hob |
| Roller blind, solid or sunscreen fabric | Kitchens (away from hob), service yards | Clean, minimal, from $55/sqm | Fabric can absorb odours and grease if exposed to heavy cooking |
| Combi / zebra blind | Utility rooms, dry-side bathrooms | Daylight plus privacy in one blind, from $88/sqm | More fabric surface to keep clean |
| Timber venetian | Dry rooms only | Warm natural look | Not ideal for steamy or splash-prone spaces |
| Curtain track | Not recommended | Fabric traps steam and cooking odours | Better suited to living rooms and bedrooms |
Prices shown are our starting prices per square metre and are GST-inclusive. Final cost depends on size, material and motor choice, and the 1.5 sqm minimum billing applies to fabric-based blinds, which matters for small windows. See our 2026 pricing guide for how that works.
Kitchen Windows: Keep Grease and Heat in Mind
The main enemy in a kitchen is oil vapour. It forms a sticky film that collects dust, and over time the blind darkens and feels tacky. Wipe-clean slats or a smooth roller fabric make this manageable. Position matters too: if the window sits close to the hob, a blind that rolls up into a headrail above the cooking zone will catch more vapour than one set slightly further away.
Heat is the other factor. Low afternoon sun through a west-facing kitchen window can make cooking uncomfortable, and a motorised blind on a schedule can close before the sun hits, then reopen in the evening. The smart blinds energy guide explains how this works in practice.
Bathroom Windows: Privacy First, Splash Zone Second
Most bathroom windows in HDB flats and condos are small, frosted or louvred, and face a corridor, void deck or neighbouring block. Privacy is the priority. A venetian blind lets you angle slats to block sightlines while keeping the window ventilated, which a roller blind cannot do as easily. Keep any blind out of the direct shower spray. If your window is inside a wet shower zone, speak to us before ordering, because splash exposure is a different problem from ambient humidity.
For the motor, keep the headrail and any charging port as dry as possible. Because liquid and motors do not mix, our cleaning and maintenance guide recommends a barely damp cloth, never a spray.
Service Yard Windows: Power Is the Real Question
Service yard windows are often tucked in a corner with no nearby power point. A hardwired motor needs a socket within reach of its cable, and running one across a wet utility area is not ideal. A cordless battery motor avoids the cable entirely. Battery versions carry a $20 to $40 premium on roller, combi and venetian blinds and usually need recharging every 3 to 6 months. We compare both in the battery vs hardwired motors guide.
Another consideration is whether you need a motor at all. For a small window you open rarely, a manual blind may be enough. The manual vs motorised guide helps you decide which rooms deserve the upgrade.
Smart Control for Small Windows
Smart automation in these rooms should be simple. A bathroom blind that closes for privacy at dusk and opens in the morning for ventilation is more useful than a complicated scene. A kitchen blind can close at a set time on sunny afternoons. Tuya (Smart Life) and Aqara motors both support schedules, and both work with Google Home and Alexa; Aqara also supports HomeKit and Siri. If you are weighing the two, see our Tuya vs Aqara comparison.
A Practical Checklist Before You Order
Measure the window at its widest and longest points, note the distance from the nearest power point, and check whether the glass is frosted, louvred or fixed. Decide whether the blind will sit inside the recess or on the wall. Photograph the window and the surrounding area, then send it to us on WhatsApp. We offer a free on-site survey, and the lead time for made-to-order blinds is 5 to 6 weeks, so plan ahead if you are renovating. Our measuring guide covers the details.
