Phasing a Motorised Blinds Project Room by Room on a Budget (Singapore)

Motorising a whole home in one go is lovely, but it's not the only way. Plenty of Singapore households start with one or two rooms and add more over months. Done in the right order, a phased project costs no more in the end and avoids the classic regret of mismatched systems.

Why Phasing Works (and Where It Can Go Wrong)

Most households have a handful of windows that matter every day — the living room, the master bedroom, maybe a home office — and several that barely move. Motorising the first group delivers most of the daily benefit, while the rest can wait for the next bonus, the next renovation round, or simply the next time you notice a manual blind is annoying you.

The risk with phasing is inconsistency: a Tuya motor here, an Aqara motor there, three different fabric tones, and no plan for power. Each purchase makes sense alone, but together they create a messy app and awkward scenes. A short plan on day one avoids that. If you haven't already, read our Tuya vs Aqara comparison before buying the first motor, because that choice shapes every later phase.

Step 1: Decide Your Ecosystem and Hub Once

Pick Tuya/Smart Life or Aqara (HomeKit) for the whole home, even if you only buy one blind now. Both work with Google Home and Alexa, and Aqara also works with Siri. If you go Aqara, factor in where the hub will sit so range is good for later rooms — see our hub placement guide.

Also settle fabric family and colour direction early. Ordering the living room now and the bedrooms in six months is fine, but only if you have a note of the fabric and tone you chose, since stock and batches can change over time.

Step 2: Rank Windows by How Much They Bother You

Rank rooms by daily friction rather than by size. A small bedroom window you open and close every day is usually a better first buy than a huge window in a guest room. A simple ranking looks like this:

Priority Typical room Why it comes first Suggested product
FirstMaster bedroomDaily use, wake-up and sleep routines, blackoutBlackout roller (from $60/sqm) or Combi Blackout ($99/sqm)
FirstLiving roomBiggest daily glare and heat, most visibleSmart curtain track (from $150) or roller blinds
SecondHome officeGlare on screens and video callsSunscreen roller (from $55/sqm) or Combi Dimout ($88/sqm)
SecondChildren's roomsNap and bedtime light control, no cords to reachRoller or Combi, see our child safety guide
LaterGuest room, study nookRarely usedManual blinds for now, upgrade later
LaterKitchen, bathroom, yardHumidity-friendly choices, low motor needVenetian (from $80/sqm) or manual roller

Step 3: Use Manual Blinds as Placeholders, Not Waste

A useful trick is to buy manual blinds now for lower-priority windows, with the plan to motorise later. On our roller and combi blinds the beaded-chain manual option adds no motor cost, while smart motor upgrades add roughly $290 to $385 per blind depending on size and brand (Tuya Smart, Tuya Cordless or Aqara). That gap is the real cost of deferring, so decide per window whether the daily convenience is worth it.

One honest caveat: a motor upgrade on an existing blind is not always a simple swap, because blinds are typically replaced as a unit. Our retrofit guide explains what is and isn't practical. If you know you will motorise a window within a year, it is usually cleaner to order the motorised version now rather than buy manual first.

Step 4: Plan Power for All Phases at Once

The cheapest moment to sort out power points is early, even if some blinds arrive later. Hardwired motors use a plug, so a nearby socket matters; battery (cordless) motors avoid the socket but add a $20 to $40 premium and need charging every few months. If you are renovating, ask your electrician to leave sockets at future blind positions now. Details are in our power point and cabling guide.

A Sample Three-Phase Plan

Here is how a typical 4-room HDB or small condo could be staged. Prices are indicative starting points (GST-inclusive); your own sizes and options will change the total, and a free survey gives the firm number.

Phase Rooms What you buy Why this order
Phase 1Master bedroom + living roomBlackout roller or Combi Blackout; curtain track or roller for the living roomHighest daily use, biggest comfort gain
Phase 2Home office + second bedroomSunscreen roller or Combi Dimout; roller or CombiCover glare and kids' nap routines
Phase 3Remaining rooms, yard, kitchenVenetian or manual roller; upgrade selected windows to motorsLow daily use, budget friendly

Since our standard lead time is 5 to 6 weeks, leave a gap between ordering and the date you need each phase. Delivery is free from $200 and installation is free from $500 on a single order, so bundling two rooms into one phase can lower your install cost compared with ordering them separately.

Keeping Scenes Working Across Phases

Scenes are where phasing pays off. Start with a simple 'Good Morning' for the first room, then add each new blind to the same scene as it arrives. Our scenes guide walks through building them in Google Home, Alexa, Smart Life and Aqara. Naming blinds consistently from the start (for example 'Master Bedroom Blackout') saves a lot of cleanup later.

Budget Sanity Checks Before You Commit

Before approving any phase, check four things: have you measured accurately (see our measuring guide), is the 1.5 sqm minimum billing rule affecting your small windows, are your sockets ready, and does the product suit the room's humidity and sun. For overall price context, our 2026 cost guide shows typical ranges so you can sanity-check your own quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it more expensive to motorise rooms in separate phases?
Not on the products themselves, since pricing is per window. The extra cost usually comes from installing in several visits and losing the free-install threshold on smaller orders (free from $500, free delivery from $200), so grouping rooms into fewer phases helps.
Which room should I motorise first?
Most households start with the master bedroom and the living room, because they have the highest daily use and the biggest comfort gain from blackout control, glare management and scheduled routines.
Can I mix Tuya and Aqara motors across phases?
It is possible, but it makes your app and scenes more complicated, because each brand uses its own app. Most customers are happier choosing one ecosystem up front and sticking with it.
Should I buy manual blinds first and upgrade later?
Only for windows you are unsure about. Manual beaded-chain blinds add no motor cost, but upgrading later usually means replacing the blind unit, so if you know a window will be motorised, ordering the motorised version straight away is often cleaner.
How far ahead should I order each phase?
Allow for our standard 5 to 6 week lead time, plus a free on-site survey beforehand. If a phase depends on renovation finishing, order once measurements are final.
