Troubleshooting Tuya and Aqara Motorised Blinds: Common Issues and Quick Fixes
Smart blinds are reliable most of the time, but when one stops responding it is rarely clear whether the fault is the motor, the Wi-Fi, the hub or the app. This guide walks through the most common Tuya and Aqara issues in Singapore homes and the quick checks worth trying before you call for help.
Start Here: Is It the Motor, the Network or the App?
Almost every "my blind is broken" message we receive turns out to be one of three things: the connection (Wi-Fi or hub), the power (a flat battery or a loose plug), or the position limits. A quick way to tell them apart is to try the physical remote that comes with Tuya motors. If the blind moves on the remote, the motor and power are fine and the fault sits in the connection. If it does not move at all, look at power first. This simple split saves most of the guesswork.
Tuya / Smart Life: Common Issues
Device shows offline. Tuya motors connect over Wi-Fi, and they only support the 2.4GHz band. If your router merges 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one network name, pairing can fail or drop. Keep the router's 2.4GHz band enabled, and move the router or add a Wi-Fi extender if the blind sits far from it — thick HDB walls and metal doors weaken the signal more than most people expect.
Slow or delayed response. Cloud-based commands travel from your phone to the internet and back to the motor, so a busy home network can add a second or two. Battery (cordless) motors also sleep between commands to save charge, so the first command after a long idle can feel slower than the next.
Voice command not recognised. If the app works but Google Home or Alexa does not, the usual culprit is an expired account link. Unlink and relink the Smart Life skill or service, then re-sync devices. Renaming the blind with a short, distinct name ("Living Room Curtain") also helps voice assistants pick the right device.
Aqara Home / HomeKit: Common Issues
Hub offline. Aqara motors rely on an Aqara hub as the bridge, so if the hub loses power or Wi-Fi, every Aqara device behind it goes unresponsive together. If several devices fail at once, check the hub first rather than each motor. Power-cycle it, wait a minute or two, and see if they return.
Distance from the hub. Aqara devices talk to the hub over a low-power mesh. A blind in a far bedroom behind several walls may struggle, while one close to the hub is fine. Relocating the hub to a central spot in the flat is often the cheapest fix.
HomeKit "No Response". This typically means the Home hub (an Apple TV or HomePod) or the Aqara hub is offline. Confirm both are powered and connected before assuming the motor has failed.
Quick Diagnosis Table
| Symptom | Most likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Blind ignores the app, remote works | Wi-Fi or hub connection | Restart router (and Aqara hub); check 2.4GHz is on |
| Whole group of Aqara blinds unresponsive | Hub offline | Power-cycle the hub, wait a few minutes |
| Blind stops short of top or bottom | Position limits or an obstruction | Clear the path; message us if limits need resetting |
| Battery blind often offline | Low charge or weak signal | Recharge fully; move router or hub closer |
| Voice assistant cannot find the blind | Expired account link or unclear name | Relink the service, re-sync, rename the device |
| Blind runs but moves unevenly or grinds | Mechanical issue | Stop using it and contact us with a short video |
Power Problems: The Boring Fix That Works
Wired motors plug into a standard power point, so a loosened plug, a switched-off socket or a tripped extension can look exactly like a dead motor. Check that the plug is firmly seated and the socket is live (test it with a phone charger). For battery motors, recharge fully before concluding anything — our battery vs hardwired guide notes that cordless motors typically run months between charges, so a blind that was working fine last week and is dead today is usually just flat.
If you are curious what to expect during an outage rather than a fault, see our guide on what happens to motorised blinds in a power cut or Wi-Fi outage.
Position Limits and Stopping Short
Each motor remembers an upper and a lower limit. Blinds that stop a few centimetres short, or that hit the sill hard, usually need their limits re-set — but first rule out something physical: a window handle, a curtain panel brushing the track, or a pelmet edge catching the bottom rail. Fabric also relaxes slightly over the first weeks of use, so a small change in where a blind sits is not unusual. Please avoid forcing a blind past where it stops; message us instead so the limits are reset properly.
Adding Blinds to an Existing Smart Home
If you are mixing brands, keep it simple. Pair each motor in its own brand's app first, confirm it works there, and only then link it to Google Home or Alexa. Building scenes in a single place (Google Home or Alexa) avoids the confusion of having half a routine in one app and half in another. Our Tuya vs Aqara guide explains which ecosystem suits which household, and the smart home scenes guide walks through building routines.
A Simple Troubleshooting Order
When something misbehaves, work through it in this order: (1) check the power or charge, (2) try the remote, (3) check the Wi-Fi or hub, (4) reopen the app and confirm the device is online, (5) relink the voice assistant, and (6) contact us. Most issues are solved by step three. Changing too many things at once makes it harder to tell what fixed it, so test after each step.
When to Call Us
If a blind makes grinding noises, moves unevenly, or stays unresponsive after the power, remote and network checks, stop using it and message us on WhatsApp with a short video of the problem. That helps us tell a settings issue from a hardware one. Warranty coverage differs by product — see our motor warranty guide for the specifics — and we would always rather you ask than force a stuck blind.
