How Noisy Are Motorised Blinds? Quiet Operation for Bedrooms, Nurseries and Work-From-Home in Singapore
Singapore flats are compact and walls are thin, so the first thing many people ask about motorised blinds is not the price or the app. It is: will it be loud? Here is what actually makes a motorised window treatment noisy or quiet, and how to plan for bedrooms, nurseries and work-from-home corners.
What You Will Actually Hear
A motorised blind or curtain track makes a short, low sound while it moves, and nothing at all once it stops. Think of a soft mechanical hum with the gentle sound of fabric rolling or gliding on top. The movement itself usually takes only a few seconds to a minute depending on the window height or track length, so the noise is brief rather than constant.
We do not publish decibel ratings for our motors, and we would rather not quote numbers that depend on your specific window. What we can say honestly is that the motor is only part of the story. Most of the sounds people notice come from how the blind is installed and what it is moving.
What Makes Motorised Blinds Louder or Quieter
Size and weight. A wide, tall roller or a heavy lined curtain asks more of the motor than a small bathroom blind. Heavier loads can sound deeper and slightly longer. This is why long curtain tracks have a higher-torque option (2 N·m instead of the default 1.2 N·m) for heavier fabric.
Installation quality. Loose brackets, a headrail that is not level, or a blind that brushes the window frame or a sill can add rattles and scraping that have nothing to do with the motor. A careful professional install, or a careful DIY install following the instructions for the curtain track DIY set, makes a real difference.
Fabric and mechanism. Roller and combi blinds wind fabric around a tube. Venetian blinds tilt and lift slats, which naturally produces a soft clicking or clacking compared with fabric. Curtain tracks add a quiet glide of runners along the rail. None of these is loud, but they sound different, which matters if you are particular about the type of noise.
Dust and wear. A track clogged with dust, or a bent bottom bar, can start to scrape over time. Regular wiping and a quick bracket check, covered in our cleaning and maintenance guide, usually keep things smooth.
Quiet-Sensitive Spaces: What to Choose
| Space | What matters most | Sensible options |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery / nap room | Darkness and no sudden sounds | Blackout roller (from $60/sqm) or combi Blackout ($99/sqm); battery motor for no cables, scheduled well away from naps |
| Master bedroom | Blackout plus a gentle wake-up | Blackout roller, combi Blackout, or a double curtain track (from $150); schedule a slow morning open |
| Home office / study | No noise during calls | Sunscreen roller (from $55/sqm) or combi Dimout ($88/sqm); set movement outside meeting hours |
| Living room | Large span, occasional movement | Curtain track (from $150) or roller blinds; noise matters less, so choose on light and look |
| Balcony | Weather first, noise second | Outdoor zip blinds from $170/sqm; SOMFY Silent motor option (+$850 vs +$460 for A-OK Tuya, over the manual chain) |
All prices above are GST-inclusive. The 1.5 sqm minimum billing area applies to roller, combi, venetian and zip blinds, and panel widths top out at 3.0m for roller and zip and 2.4m for combi and venetian before a window is split into more than one panel.
Battery vs Hardwired: Does It Change the Noise?
People often assume a battery motor is quieter because it is smaller, or louder because it is cordless. In practice, both types are designed for home use and the difference is not something we would promise on paper. The real difference is practical. A battery (cordless) motor means no cable running down the wall, which is popular for nurseries and bedrooms, at a +$20 to +$40 premium and a recharge every 3 to 6 months. A hardwired UK-plug motor needs a nearby power point but never needs charging. Our battery vs hardwired guide goes through the trade-offs in detail.
Use Scheduling to Avoid Noise Altogether
The easiest way to make motorised blinds feel silent is to control when they move. In the Tuya Smart Life or Aqara Home app you can set a schedule so a bedroom blind opens at a gentle time, or leave a nursery blind alone during nap windows. A few habits that work well in Singapore homes:
Keep bedrooms and nurseries out of the whole-house "Good Morning" scene so a living room routine does not trigger a sleeping room. Build a separate bedroom scene instead, as in our scenes guide. Schedule blinds to close before the evening, rather than while someone is already asleep. And during work-from-home hours, avoid voice triggers or automations that could move a blind during a video call. If you use voice control, our voice command cheat sheet shows how to group rooms so you only move the ones you mean to.
A Quick Pre-Install Noise Checklist
Before the install team arrives, tell us which room is the quiet-sensitive one and what time of day it needs to be quiet. Make sure the window frame and sill are clear so a bottom bar will not catch on anything. Decide early whether you want a battery or hardwired motor so we can plan power points, which is covered in our power points and cabling guide. On install day, run the blind a few times with the room quiet and tell the installer if anything rattles or scrapes. A bracket adjustment on the spot is far easier than chasing a noise later. After a few weeks, our first-week tips are a good checklist for fine tuning.
If It Starts Sounding Different
A change in sound is a useful early warning. Wipe the track or headrail, check that brackets are tight, make sure nothing has fallen behind the blind, and confirm the bottom bar is not catching on the sill.
