Siri and Apple HomeKit With Aqara Motorised Blinds: A Singapore Setup Guide
If your household runs on iPhones, the nicest way to control motorised blinds is often the simplest: ask Siri. Here is how Aqara motors fit into Apple Home, what you need at home to make it dependable, and the limits to know about before you order.
Why Aqara Is the Apple-Friendly Choice
We offer two motor ecosystems: Tuya (Smart Life app, Google Home, Alexa) and Aqara, which is the one built around Apple HomeKit. If most people in your home use iPhones and want Siri and the Apple Home app, Aqara is usually the natural pick. If you are still deciding between the two, our Tuya vs Aqara comparison lays out the trade-offs.
Aqara motors are available across our blind range (roller, combi/zebra and venetian), and the Aqara C3 motor is also an option on curtain tracks that need extra torque for long or heavy curtains. On the pricing side, the Aqara motor upgrade over a manual blind is about +$348 (S) / +$385 (M) on roller and combi blinds. For the full manual-vs-motor cost picture see our upgrade worth-it guide.
What You Need at Home
Think of it as three layers. First, the motor on your blind or curtain track. Second, an Aqara hub, which talks to the motors and bridges them into Apple Home. Third, an Apple home hub: a HomePod or Apple TV that stays at home, powered on and connected to your Wi-Fi. The Apple home hub is what lets you control blinds when you are out and keeps automations running without your phone.
Hub placement matters more than most people expect, especially in HDB flats with thick walls and a household shelter. Read our hub placement and range guide before deciding where to plug it in.
Setting It Up, Step by Step
1. Power and pair the motor. Once your blinds are installed and powered (or charged, for battery motors), add the motor to the Aqara hub in the Aqara Home app and set the open and closed limits so the blind stops where you want.
2. Add the hub to Apple Home. Use the HomeKit setup code on the hub, scan it in the Apple Home app and assign it to the right room. Blinds paired to the hub then appear as accessories you can place in rooms.
3. Name things for your voice. Short, distinct names work best: "Bedroom blinds", "Living room curtain". Avoid near-identical names across rooms, because Siri may pick the wrong one.
4. Test by voice and by percentage. Try "Hey Siri, close the bedroom blinds" and "Hey Siri, set the living room curtain to 50%". Then test again from outside the house to confirm your home hub is doing its job.
What Siri and Apple Home Can Do
| What you want | What it takes | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Say "Hey Siri, close the bedroom blinds" | Aqara motor + Aqara hub added to Apple Home | Works on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod |
| Open or close from outside the house | Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) set up at home | Needs to stay powered on and online |
| Sunrise / sunset or time automations | Apple Home automations (or Aqara Home) | Home hub makes them more reliable |
| Scenes like Good Morning / Movie Night | Apple Home scenes combining blinds, lights, aircon plugs | Name scenes simply so Siri recognises them |
| Mix with Google Home or Alexa | Link Aqara to a second platform | Possible, but keep one main app for naming |
Automations That Suit Singapore Homes
Our tropical climate makes timing the main benefit. A west-facing living room can close its blinds to a chosen position in the afternoon to take the edge off the heat and glare, then open again at dusk. An east-facing bedroom can open partway at a sensible time in the morning instead of snapping fully open. Because Apple Home supports automations based on time and sunrise/sunset, you can build these without extra gear.
If you want a full routine, for example blinds plus lights for movie night, see our smart home scenes guide, which explains how to build scenes across the major apps. For the energy angle, our heat and light control guide is worth a read.
Limits and Things to Plan For
Siri control depends on your Wi-Fi, the Aqara hub and your Apple home hub all being online, so a router restart or power cut will interrupt it. Our power cut and Wi-Fi outage guide explains what to expect and what still works. Battery-powered motors also need charging every few months (roughly 3-6 months per charge), so decide early whether hardwired or battery suits each window; the battery vs hardwired guide covers this.
If something stops responding, work through the basics in order: hub online, range, home hub, then the motor limits. Our troubleshooting guide follows the same order.
Should You Choose Aqara for Siri?
Choose Aqara if your household is mostly Apple, you like the Apple Home app and you are happy to keep a HomePod or Apple TV at home. Choose Tuya if you rely on the Smart Life app with Google Home or Alexa. If you are mixed, it is perfectly workable to link accounts across platforms, but pick one primary app so names and rooms stay tidy. As always, we are happy to advise on a free on-site survey, and lead time for fabric-based blinds is typically 5-6 weeks, so decide your ecosystem before you order.
