Working With Your Interior Designer or Renovation Contractor on Motorised Blinds in Singapore
In a Singapore renovation, windows are usually the last thing anyone talks about and the first thing that goes wrong. The carpenter builds a pelmet, the electrician closes the ceiling, the painter finishes, and only then does someone ask where the blinds go. Motorised products need a little more planning than manual ones. This guide shows what to tell your interior designer or contractor, and when.
Why Motorised Blinds Need Earlier Planning
A manual curtain only needs a rod and a bracket. A motorised curtain track or blind adds a motor, which needs a power source or a charging routine, enough clearance to sit hidden, and a clear spot for the app to reach it. None of this is hard, but each point is cheaper to solve before the ceiling is closed than after.
The other reason is timing. Fabric-based blinds have a 5-6 week lead time from order to delivery, so they cannot be an afterthought in the final week before move-in. If you read our common mistakes guide, you will recognise this as one of the most frequent regrets.
Who Does What
The clearest way to avoid gaps is to agree on an owner for each item. This is a typical split for a BTO or condo renovation, which you can adjust to suit your own team.
| Item | Who usually handles it | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Window sizes and positions | Interior designer / us | Final measurements after walls, ceilings and pelmets are done |
| Pelmet or curtain box depth | Designer and carpenter | 10cm single track, 18cm double track |
| Power points near windows | Designer and electrician | Before ceiling and wall closing, for wired motors |
| Curtain or blind fabric choice | Homeowner with designer | Match opacity to the room; confirm before ordering |
| Ordering and lead time | Homeowner | Order about 6 weeks before you need them installed |
| Install day | Us, or our install team | After painting and flooring protection are removed |
What to Give Your Designer and Contractor
A window list. Write down every window and door that gets a covering, with the room name and a rough width. Mark which ones you want motorised first and which stay manual for now. Our phasing guide helps you choose, and the 2026 price guide gives realistic budgets: curtain track from $150, roller blinds from $55/sqm, combi from $88/sqm, venetian from $80/sqm and outdoor zip blinds from $170/sqm, all GST-inclusive.
Pelmet clearance. If your designer is drawing a ceiling or curtain box, tell them a single curtain track needs about 10cm and a double track about 18cm. Tracks shown on our track types guide can then be planned around the pelmet from day one rather than squeezed in later.
Power point locations. Wired motors use a UK plug, so a socket near the motor end of each window is needed. Share this with your electrician before walls close. Our power point planning guide explains the options, and any fixed socket work should be done by a licensed electrician. If a window is awkward, a battery motor is a fair alternative, at roughly $20-$40 extra and with a charge every 3-6 months.
Smart home preferences. Decide whether the home will use Tuya or Aqara, as your designer may also be specifying lights and switches. Mixing ecosystems without a plan is a common headache, so skim the Tuya vs Aqara comparison before the electrical plan is final.
A Simple Renovation Timeline
Design stage: share the window list, pelmet depths and power requirements. Ask us any product questions by WhatsApp.
Carpentry and electrical stage: build pelmets to the right depth and install sockets where wired motors will sit. This is the last cheap moment to fix mistakes.
Near the end of works: once ceilings, windows and wall finishes are final, book our free on-site survey and confirm measurements. Our measuring guide explains what we check. Place your order at this point and allow the 5-6 week lead time.
Before move-in: install after painting and heavy dust-generating works are done, so fabric and motors are not exposed to plaster dust. Our installation timeline guide covers what to expect on the day. Free delivery applies to orders of $200 and above, and free installation to $500 and above.
Avoid These Coordination Slips
Two people ordering. The designer orders curtains, you order blinds, and one window ends up with both or neither. Fix this with a single window list that shows who supplies each item.
Measuring too early. Measurements taken before final plastering or ceiling work can be off by a few centimetres, which matters for a made-to-measure product. Wait until the site is nearly finished.
Drilling before checking. Contractors sometimes drill brackets to save time. Motorised products need exact positions and the right fixings, so check with us first. A wrong drill hole is hard to hide on a new ceiling.
Forgetting the router. Wi-Fi motors need a stable 2.4GHz signal at each window, and the hub also needs a good spot. If your designer is hiding the router in a cabinet, confirm signal reaches the far rooms. See our hub placement guide for tips.
